eduGAIN

The MREN Identity Federation assists cross-institutional services by providing federated authentication and authorization among participating organizations. Any education or research institution connected to MREN, wishing to provide services to the community can become member of MREN Identity Federation.

Categories of members in MREN's Identity Federation::
  • Identity Provider (IdP) - provides the required infrastructure for the authentication of users
  • Service Provider (SP) - provides services to other federation members or allows access to resources.

The MREN Identity Federation plans to become part of eduGAIN (Education and Global Authentication Infrastructure), the GEANT inter-federation service that connects many research and education identity federations worldwide, simplifying access to content, services and resources for the global research and education community.

The eduGAIN service connects existing academic Identity Federations beyond national borders and which extends the coverage of identities and the accessibility of services in Europe (and beyond). With eduGAIN users of an institution in an Identity Federation can access web-based services of other institutions in other Identity Federations. Interconnection of identity federations around the world, simplifying access to content, services and resources for the global research and education community. eduGAIN enables the trustworthy exchange of information related to identity, authentication and authorisation (AAI).

The main advantages of the digital identity federation are:
  • Students, teachers and researchers have secure access to the services and resources of different member organizations by using existing single institutional account.
  • Service providers have opportunity to offer their services to large number of users.
  • Institutions do not have to invest in new resources that can be shared through the federation.
